Today is garbage day.
[If you are in a hurry, click here for the “scoop” on today’s webinar on launching a new business, or keep reading for today’s email tips.]
I live in the city of Boston and week after week I’d check my garbage can in the alley next to my building.
What was in there every week?Dog poop.
Maybe that would have been ok – if I owned a dog – but I don’t!
I tried to cover it and to move it farther from the street. It didn’t make a difference. The passers-by would just throw their dog poop farther.
Every week I’d empty the can and often have to take some extra time cleaning and disinfecting the can. Sometimes I would literally have to hold my nose when it smelled bad!
Finally, this week I got smart and turned the garbage can over so no one could throw anything in from the sidewalk.

Ah, I love your story. I think the analogy for me is e-mail. I sit down and start my day with e-mail and sometime that never ends all day! Just responding to and sending e-mail.
I try to answer everyone because i’m pretty sure i’ll forget and lose the e-mail if I don’t. But this “system” is not working for me. In fact, I think I can smell it outside my window…
Thanks for the opportunity to reflect. Simple step: Schedule first things first.
