You’ll never guess what I’ve been up to lately…? You guessed it (or not): clearing my closet.
In honor of the July 4th holiday, Canada Day, and honestly overcome by the mess that had piled up when I wasn’t paying attention, I decided to gain a new sense of freedom – from my stuff!
I’d walk into my closet and be afraid it would literally come crashing down on me. Talk about a burden, as I have been suffocating under the grip of my clothes and shoes.
So far, I have collected 8 bags of shoes, clothes, and purses for donation – and I’m not done yet.
Yes, just like I encourage you to ask for help, I called in an organizer/ stylist to come over and help me let go of more, decide faster (without the emotional connections), and stay committed to the outcome.
I just took a break to write you this week’s money tip…
MONEY TIP: Find your freedom! What do you have too much of? What do you feel burdened by? What is holding you back from moving forward in your job, business, relationships, health, weight,…? You name it – let’s free you from what isn’t working!
After I backpacked around India for 4 weeks in 2006, I came home and gave away ~1/3 of my stuff. I saw how simply – and happily – these people lived and decided that I wanted more of that simplicity and unburdened joy in my life too. (I tell more of my India realizations in our book Self Worth to Net Worth.)
ACTION STEPS: Use a few hours this holiday weekend to free yourself with these 3 easy steps:
1- Take a good look around your home, especially at your clothes, shoes, home furnishings, keepsakes, papers/ magazines, and other office stuff.
2- Choose one area where you have the most emotional charge – literally you may find yourself holding your breath or tightening up when you think of this area of your life/home.
3- Set a timer for a mere 15 minutes to get started. See how much you can get through to donate or purge. If you’re feeling ambitious, go for 30 or 60 minutes.
Just be sure to finish out the time – and then once again, celebrate your completion and new sense of freedom.
THE PAYOFF: Head into your summer – literally – lighter, less burdened, and more open to the opportunities, joy, and fun available to you.
