How to save $215 on a rental car (+ 23 free gifts expire tonight!)

by Belinda Rosenblum

I love going on vacation, but honestly don’t love the price tag (and what used to be guilt) in spending the money to go.

Have you ever felt that way too?

[And if you are a business owner who wants more clients to have more cash for your trip, a quick final reminder…The Grow Your List Giveaway ends today at midnight, so be sure to get your hands on the generous gifts from my 23 fellow contributors!]

Here is a much better alternative so you CAN take that much-needed vaca:

Plan ahead with what you will spend and then minimize each of the related costs – while maximizing the benefit to you. (Stay tuned for a link next week when I’m featured in an article from GoBanking Rates on how to start saving now for your summer vacation.)

As a start, we had a great win when we saved $215 on a rental car! Here’s how…

OWN YOUR MONEY TIP: If you need to rent a car, try these resources, in order of priority:

File Mar 03, 11 53 01 AM1. AutoSlash.com – My new FAVE! They allowed me to compare their best rates with the six major companies, with savings already figured in if I had BJs, COSTCO, AAA/CAA, USAA, AARP, or even the Entertainment Book!

We needed a minivan for last week in Palm Springs – that’s us in the pic! (Seth called it a “spaceship” and loved it. He asked if we could “take it home” lol!) The rates varied and I selected the lowest priced option. Then in the few weeks before we left, Auto Slash emailed us 2 additional times to let us know they had lowered our booked rate. The final rate was reduced from $330 to $306 – lower than comparable options up to $520 – for a savings of $214 or 42%!

2. COSTCO or BJs website – Use your membership benefits to enjoy lower pre-negotiated rates from their group buying power.

3. Kayak.com or similar travel site – Helpful for comparison purposes.

And before you book, double check the rental car company site that you want to go with to ensure booking through the 3rd party gets you the best price. I encourage that for airlines especially too.

What is your favorite money saving vacation strategy? I’d love to hear about it! Let me know in the comments below.

Awesome – let’s make 2017 the year you go on that awesome vacation… and get the best prices so you can enjoy every minute of it!

Thank you so much for this. I am renting a car in Maine for 13 days in July and found a rate saving me $24. Not a lot, but hey, it adds up! Made the reservation and then went back to cancel the one I had previously purchased through Priceline only to find there is a $50 fee to cancel. So I’m stuck with the extra $24.

AutoSlash found a better price for an upgraded car. Next time I’ll use them for sure!
